Over 3 million pilgrims mark Imam Mahdi birth anniv. at Jamkaran Mosque

Qom, IRNA – From early morning till noon Wednesday over three million followers of the twelfth Shia Imam took part in the birthday anniversary of Imam Mahdi at Jamkaran Mosque in Qom, Iran.

Abolghasem Moghimi, deputy governor general for cultural, social and pilgrimage affairs of Qom Province, said on Wednesday that the number of pilgrims has been estimated based on road traffics towards the holy mosque of Jamkaran as well as cell phones near the sacred place.

According to the official, the number of cars traffics in Qom province increased 25 percent in the Mid-Sha'ban holiday, which is the 15th day of the Islamic lunar calendar's eighth month called Sha'ban that marks the birth anniversary of the twelfth Shia Imam.

Sadeq Bitarafan, cultural director general of the Qom governor general’s office, said that pupils and students have attended the procession massively to commemorate the holiday and set up stations to provide pilgrims of the Jamkaran Mosque with services.

Other groups such as resistance movements have also set up stations to assist those pilgrims who travel from the holy shrine of Lady Ma’suma to the Jamkaran Mosque on foot, the official said.

During the celebration of Imam Mahdi’s birth anniversary, several groups such as artists, photographers and calligraphers hold cultural events to commemorate the sacred occasion, Bitarafan added.
